November Gardening
The leaves are starting to fall rapidly, and wind and rain are on the increase, if that is possible after the summer we have had. Tender plants will need protecting from frost, gales and freezing rains. Move plants into the greenhouse, or into a sheltered spot, but if you can’t, it is worth wrapping plants or pots. Remember winter can be a tough time for birds in terms of water and food, so keep supplies well topped up.
November Jobs
- Planting: You can plant bare-root trees, shrubs, and hedging plants this month. It’s also a good time to plant tulip bulbs for a colourful spring display.
- Pruning: November is a good time to prune roses, apple trees, and pear trees. Cut back any dead or diseased wood and remove any crossing branches.
- Lawn care: Keep your lawn free of leaves and debris. You can also give it a final mow before winter sets in.
- General maintenance: Clean and oil your garden tools before storing them for the winter. You can also cover your garden furniture and store any pots that are not frost-proof.
- Wildlife: Provide food and water for birds and other wildlife. You can also create a compost heap to provide a habitat for insects and other small creatures.
